Intent

Our vision is of a community where people of faith and no faith live side by side. There will be mutual understanding respect and friendship together. It is the duty of all schools to address issues of ‘how we live together and deal with difference’, however difficult and controversial they may seem.

We want to develop the children’s knowledge and understanding of, and their ability to respond to Christianity and other principal world religions, notably in our school- Islam, Judaism, Hinduism and other world views such as Humanism. By exploring issues within these faiths, children learn to understand and respect different religions, beliefs, values and traditions and their influences on individuals, societies, communities and cultures.

Implementation

The principal aim of Religious Education is to explore what people believe and what difference this makes to how they live.

Religious Education is a core subject. In our school it is taught as a discrete subject. We use the Oldham Agreed Syllabus scheme of work.

We study one religion at a time (‘systematic’ units), and then include ‘thematic’ units, which build on learning by comparing the religions, beliefs and practices studied. The children learn about the core concepts in religions and beliefs in a coherent way, developing their understanding and their ability to handle questions of religion and belief. The teaching and learning approach has three core elements, which are woven together to provide breadth and balance within teaching and learning about religions and beliefs, underpinning the aims of RE. Teaching and learning in the classroom will encompass all three elements, allowing for overlap between elements as suits the religion, concept and question being explored.

Impact
The impact of the Religious Education curriculum can be seen in the work our children produce and in collection of pupil voice. Our children enjoy RE and can talk confidently about their learning.
We want all children to have a better understanding of the religions that make up the UK landscape and how they can learn from each other to create community cohesion and become caring conscientious citizens.
